Season three of The Walking Dead will introduce fan-favorites from the graphic novel, Michonne and the Govenor to the cast of the zombie survivalists. The TV series’ creators want to continue to deviate from the original source material by introducing a new character that will serve as the governor’s right-hand man. Actor Dallas Roberts was cast to play the role of Milton, one of the residents of the Woodbury community that will appear in season three.

Executive producer and creator of The Walking Dead Robert Kirkman described the character as “the details guy.” In an interview, Kirkman continued to explain the new character:

He’s the guy that works with the Governor, who is monitoring all situations and is trying to help the Governor make sense of this world that they’re living in. He’s not exactly a scientist, but he’s a smart guy that is trying to find out how zombies behave. Watching him do his little experiments is going to be a lot of fun.

Milton is not the only original character introduced to the TV series The Walking Dead. The character of Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Meril Dixon (Michael Rooker) were introduced to The Walking Dead during the series’ first season. At first, fans of the graphic novel were not happy with the change but the pair were eventually well-received and accepted. And let’s not forget T-Dog (IronE Singleton).

Dallas Roberts appeared on the short-lived AMC series Rubicon and has a recurring role on CBS’ The Good Wife. He also appeared as the character of Hendricks in the movie The Grey earlier this year.

The showrunner of The Walking Dead Glen Mazzarra explains the need to expand the world if the series should continue. He also describes the characters as ambiguous and more realistic…

We were examining, ‘How do people survive in this apocalyptic world, and what can people contribute?’” explains Mazzara. “And we didn’t think it was plausible that every single character we meet is an efficient zombie killer. We just didn’t buy that everyone we know would be active and deft enough to kill every walker. We wanted to show how other people survive, and Dallas has come in and helped us establish that character. He just adds a lot of heart and humanity to Woodbury, which further complicates what that is. That is a real town with real people and real survivors. It’s not necessarily a group of bad guys.

The season three premiere of The Walking Dead airs on October 14th on AMC. The Blu-ray/DVD of The Walking Dead season two will hit stores on August 28th.
